The MLA International Bibliography is the first database to check to identify scholarly journal articles on literary topics.

  • References to articles in 4,400 journals from 1926 onward.
  • References to books, chapters (or essays) in books, and dissertations.
  • Abstracts are included for selected journals as of April 2008; this has been applied retrospectively for some journals

 

ABELL is the second database to check to identify scholarly journal articles on literary topics, covering literatures in English only.

  • From 1920 onward, ABELL includes references to articles, books, chapters (or essays) in books, dissertations (until 1999), and book reviews of secondary sources.
  • More than 350 fulltext journals.

Gale Literature Resource Center is the third database to check to identify articles on literary topics.

  • Contains 260 fulltext periodicals.
  • Tip: There are some hidden articles in LRC that are reprinted in full text in a specific criticism reference source, such as Contemporary Literary Criticism. If you find a reference to an article in MLAIB or ABELL and the journal is not available at Concordia in print or electronic, try to copy and paste the article title in LRC to see if it is reprinted in one of the criticsm reference sources.

Gale Literature Criticism provides full text or selections of full text of essays and articles re-published in the following reference works:

IMB Online is a bibliographic database that provides citations to articles and other items in all medieval subjects covering more than 4000 journals.

  • Covers all aspects of medieval studies within the date range of 450 to 1500 for the entire continent of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa for the period before the Muslim conquest and parts of those areas subsequently controlled by Christian powers.
  • 1967 onward.

Covering the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700), ITER: Gateway to the Middle Ages & Renaissance indexes more than 1,100 journals and provides citations for journal articles, reviews, review articles, bibliographies, catalogues, abstracts and discographies.

  • Includes access to Iter Italicum, which is an online version of Paul Oskar Kristeller's Iter Italicum, "the most comprehensive finding list available of previously uncatalogued or incompletely catalogued Renaissance humanistic manuscripts found in libraries and collections all over the world."
  • Includes access to the International Directory of Scholars (IDS) by the Renaissance Society of America (RSA) and Scholars of Early Modern Studies (SEMS) by the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference (SCSC). "The IDS is a comprehensive resource which accommodates not only the usual directory contact information, but also detailed information on the research and teaching careers of scholars around the world."
  • Index of materials published since 1784.

World Shakespeare Bibliography provides annotated entries for books, articles, book reviews, dissertations, theatrical productions, reviews of productions, audiovisual materials, electronic media, and other scholarly and popular materials related to Shakespeare.

  • Includes listings of stage, musical, dance, and video adaptations of Shakespeare's works.
  • 1962 onward.

The Chaucer Bibliography Online "includes materials from the Annotated Chaucer Bibliography published annually in Studies in the Age of Chaucer."

  • Lists materials (with summaries) for Chaucer studies from 1975 onward, including books, journal articles, and audiovisual media.

CPI.Q provides coverage of all subject areas with an emphasis on Canadian and international issues. It provides citations to more than 400 English and French language journals and magazines, including approximately 30 American titles.

  • Fulltext of articles from approximately 160 of the titles.
  • Also includes the fulltext of Globe and Mail articles from 1997 onwards.
  • Searches can be limited to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Index: 1980 onward. Fulltext generally begins in 1995 (coverage varies depending on the journal title).

ProQuest Combined Canadian provides fulltext of Canadian major daily newspapers. Globe and Mail from 1977. Montreal Gazette from 1985.

  • Indexes Canadian magazines, academic journals and special interest publications with fulltext articles from more than 100 titles. Searches can be limited to peer-reviewed publications.

Canadian Literary Centre consists of book and reference content from Essays on Canadian Writing Press (ECW Press). ECW Press also provides several individual monographs and biographies, essays and literary criticism. The database includes book reviews, essays, author biographies, and much more. This database is updated on a daily basis.

The Bibliography of Comparative Studies in Canadian, Québec and Foreign Literatures provides on-line access to a bibliographic database of articles, books, reviews, periodicals, and other references dealing with Comparative Canadian Literature. Each bibliographic entry contains full bibliographic information as well as a list of keywords and a list of authors under study.

  • 1850 onward.

A large multidisplinary database, Academic Search Complete indexes more than 10,000 periodicals and includes fulltext for more than 5,100 peer-reviewed journals, including more than 300 journals in literature and allied fields.

  • Also provides indexing and fulltext for magazines and some newspapers.
  • Begins in 1887.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a citation database that allows identification of the number of times a particular work or author is cited in the periodical literature.

  • Part of Web of Science, Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.
  • 1989 onward.

Humanities & Social Sciences Index Retrospective: 1907-1984 indexes articles and book reviews in nearly 1,100 periodicals covering a broad range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences.

Année philologique is a comprehensive index for scholarly research in classical studies. L'Année philologique contains over 375,000 bibliographic records to books, book reviews, conference proceedings and journal articles. It covers all aspects of classical studies including literature, linguistics, archaeology, textual and literary history, religion, law, theatre, philosophy and science.

  • Tip: To search by keyword, click on FULL TEXT; this means you are searching the citation and abstract, not the full text of an article or book.
  • Tip: to search for records about an ancient author, click on ANCIENT AUTHOR. Ex: Aeschylus.

C19: The Nineteenth century Index is a bibliographic index for 19th-century research, providing records for millions of documents ranging from books and newspapers to government documents and periodicals. It includes all the records listed in Poole's Index to Periodical Literature as well as the Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals (1824-1900), British Periodicals (1790-1931) and the American Periodicals Series (1791-1919). It also provides access to Palmer's Index to the Times (1790-1905), the full text of which is available on Times Digital Archive (1785-1985). It includes links to the full-text articles in Periodicals Archive Online and JSTOR. It also includes links to the full text of the British House of Commons Parliamentary Papers.

  • Includes access to Archive Finder, which "is a current directory of 5,596 repositories and 154,678 collections of primary source material across the United States."
  • C19 covers materials published from 1770 to 1931.

Periodicals Archive Online makes available backfiles of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from 1802 to 2000.

  • Includes more than 500 titles in six separate collections.
  • Click on Article Search to begin.

American Periodicals consists of journals and periodicals published between 1741-1940.

British Periodicals consists of more than 460 full-text journals published between 1681-1939.

AfricaBib includes the bibliographic database Africana Periodical Literature.

JSTOR provides access to archives of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. JSTOR presents searchable full text, in facsimile form, of the complete back files of important scholarly journals, generally from the first volume through issues published prior to the most recent three years. Current issues are not available. JSTOR is a consortium of approximately 1,800 participating academic institutions and is continually expanding.

America: History & Life covers all aspects of U.S. and Canadian history, culture and current affairs from prehistoric times to the present.

  • 1964 onward. Some coverage from 1954-1962.

Historical Abstracts provides citations with abstracts to articles in some 2,000 journals and citations to books and dissertations on political, diplomatic, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual history. Covers the history of the world since 1450 except for the U.S. and Canada.
