Initiatives bringing together Anglophone and Francophone college-level students in Quebec

Recorded at a QUESCREN Lunch & Learn webinar on February 22, 2024

Context

Maria Popica examines three intercultural twinning projects conducted at John Abbott College, which aimed to enhance student motivation for learning French and improve their intercultural communication skills.

Please note that this presentation and discussion took place in French.

Key Takeaways

  • Despite initial hesitation from some Anglophone students, they showed increased willingness to learn French, and their confidence in speaking the language improved by the end of the project.
  • Interlinguistic twinning programs not only enhance motivation and interest in learning French but also promote stronger bonds between Quebec's Francophones and Anglophones through mutual cultural awareness and understanding.
  • Using real-life communication in teaching languages (experiential learning) is important because it lets students interact authentically with native speakers of the language they're learning.
