Thesis supervisor: Mia Consalvo

Claire Kim holds an Honours BA in English from Acadia University. Her undergraduate thesis, “Deconstructing Systems of the Post-Apocalypse in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road” won the Acadia Department of English Honours Thesis Prize in 2023.

Claire is interested in researching the social politics of video games in the horror genre, with a particular focus on the articulation of the relationship between the player and the game. She is a research assistant at mLab and is a member of the Concordia Technoculture, Arts, and Games lab.

She has co-authored “Interactive Inspirations: The Case for Incorporating Joy and Play in Open Social Scholarship”.

Her current master’s thesis interrogates the presumed power relations between a player and the video game environment, with a focus on games that reject the typical escapist masculine power fantasy. This research is supported by SSHRC funding.

Thesis title: "Welcome to Hell, Sunshine" Disempowerment and Antagonistic Environments as Avenues for Player Introspection
