Geographies of Solitude is an immersion into the rich ecosystem of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, guided by naturalist and environmentalist Zoe Lucas who has lived more than 40 years on this remote sliver of land in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.
The film premiered at the Berlinale Forum, winning three awards, and has since garnered 27 awards including Best Canadian Feature Film at Hot Docs and Outstanding Artistry in Filmmaking from the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. The film received a critic's pick from the New York Times and was nominated a Canadian Screen Award and an IDA Documentary Award.
A graduate of Concordia's Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Mills is a Montreal-based filmmaker who originates from Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. Her works are immersive and sensorial, often exploring a healing connection to the natural world.
