Concordia's Concrete Toboggan Team races at Western University
To compete, each team has to design and build its own sled, the running surface of which must be made entirely of concrete. The craft can't weigh more than 300 pounds and must be fitted with a roll cage to protect its five riders. And every sled needs breaking and steering systems.
Teams are judged on the presentation, design, speed, handling and braking power of their toboggans. Last year, Concordia's crew finished 14th overall, out of 21 teams. This year, with a new braking system in place and some race experience under their belts, they hope to bring home the top prize.
