Date: Friday, October 25th, 2024, from 10:00 a.m.
Location: EV 11.119

Abstract

In this seminar, I will first overview the research challenges of marine energy technologies, and then present our work in the past decade on marine energy resource assessment and forecasting, power takeoff and energy conversion system modeling, control, and monitoring, and control co-design. I will also discuss powering the blue economy applications, including offshore aquaculture, and marine energy for hydrogen generation. Finally, I will summarize the talk with my vision of driving the research convergence of marine energy through multidisciplinary research collaboration, crosscutting academia-industry-community partnerships, and multi-dimensional workforce training.

Biography

Dr. Yufei Tang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and the Director of the FPL Center of Intelligent Energy Technologies (InETech) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island (URI) in 2016. His research spans marine renewable energy (tides, currents, ocean waves, offshore wind), energy conversion, smart grids, control engineering, data analytics, and machine learning. Dr. Tang has led over 30 projects with a combined funding of USD $15M, supported by various agencies and industries. He has authored approximately 140 papers, including several award-winning publications. He has mentored six Ph.D. graduates, two of whom are now tenure-track faculty at U.S. R1 research universities. Dr. Tang was honored as a 2019 National Academies Gulf Research Program Early-Career Research Fellow and received the prestigious 2022 NSF CAREER Award.
