Dominique Blain, BFA 79, has earned a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. She is one of only eight Canadian artists to receive the honour this year. Each one comes with a $25,000 grant in recognition of their contributions to the arts.
Famous for her political artwork, Blain primarily dedicates herself to installations that express a severe social critique, delving into themes such as racism, censorship, colonialism, and the power of media. She employs the reinterpretation of familiar objects to denounce injustices or question society, while maintaining a balance between form and content.
Blain has exhibited in major galleries and public spaces across Canada, the UK, Europe, and the U.S., including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Arnolfini International Centre for Contemporary Arts in Bristol. She has created several major public works of art, namely at the Maison symphonique and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, as well as at the CBC headquarters in Toronto.
Blain is currently designing sets for the upcoming play 'Lysis' at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde to be presented in May. Her creations have earned her many accolades, including the Paul-Émile-Borduas Award in 2014 and the Les Elles de l'Art Award in 2009.
Louise Lemieux Bérubé, who attended Concordia, also received a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (the Saidye Bronfman Award) for her work in fine craft. Beyond her artistic achievements, Louise has made significant contributions to the cultural landscape, co-founding the Centre des textiles contemporains de Montréal and serving as a city councillor for LaSalle.
