Campus Engagement

The Campus Engagement subcommittee seeks to ensure cohesion and transparency in the overall data collection work of the task force. The subcommittee supports the values and priorities of each identity-based group, trusting subcommittee members' expertise in connecting with their communities.

Our work is divided in two streams: one that explores instances and spaces for healthy dialogue on campus, and one that examines institutional safety measures and how individual experiences with security practices shape perceptions of safety on campus.

Call to participate

We invite the Concordia community to share their feedback through two initiatives, the Healthy Dialogue survey and the Safety/Security Consultation.

Safety/Security Consultation

As part of the STRIVE Task Force, our subcommittee aims to examine how institutional safety measures and individuals' experiences with security practices shape perceptions of safety, identity-based violence, systemic discrimination, exclusion, and how these intersect and interact at Concordia.

Specifically, the Safety/Security consultation will objectively assess how institutional communications about safety and security, the role and presence of safety and security personnel on campus, and access to resources address or contribute to feelings of safety, particularly for our community members from underrepresented groups.

Insights gathered through focus groups and anonymous written submissions will directly inform recommendations about safety and security-related policies and practices at Concordia.

Safety on campus, for the purposes of this consultation, refers to the ability of all members of the Concordia community—particularly those from underrepresented groups—to fully participate in academic and social life without experiencing identity-based violence, systemic discrimination, or exclusion.

Safety is not about avoiding discomfort or disagreement, but about ensuring that institutional policies, security measures, and community practices protect individuals from harm, discrimination, and intimidation.

A truly safe campus fosters a culture of trust, inclusion, and accountability while ensuring that no community member is subjected to threats, harassment, or exclusion based on their identity.

Security on campus refers to the institutional policies, personnel, and physical measures designed to protect students, faculty, and staff from harm. These policies and measures are shaped by institutional decision-making and should prevent violence, harassment, and discrimination while mitigating the risks that, for some communities, certain security policies can contribute to increased surveillance, exclusion, and mistrust.

For the purposes of this consultation, feeling secure is viewed as distinct from personal comfort—it is about ensuring that emergency responses, the presence and role of security personnel, and institutional communications are implemented equitably and transparently in alignment with Concordia’s commitments to anti-discrimination, equity, and inclusion.
