Concordia’s Golf Classic celebrates two decades of generosity, raising a record-breaking $600,000

The tournament and dinner have brought in more than $7.6 million for bursaries and scholarships since 2004

Organizers and supporters of the 2023 Golf Classic hold a giant cheque for $600,000, paid to Concordia University Members of Concordia’s leadership team, including President Graham Carr, joined the Golf Classic’s honorary chairs and co-presidents to present the record fundraising total.

Concordia’s Golf Classic marked 20 years on the greens by fundraising a record $600,000 for student scholarships.  

The 20th-annual tournament and dinner surpassed previous records, bringing the total to more than $7.6 million since its inception.

Golf Griffon des Sources in Mirabel, Que., hosted the 150 business leaders, alumni, donors and friends of Concordia, including many long-time supporters of the only fundraiser in Quebec that unites executives from Canada’s nine major banks.

“As members of the business community, we have a role to play in ensuring the next generation is well-equipped to face the challenges of tomorrow’s labour market,” said Golf Classic honorary co-chair Louis Tanguay, BComm 75, LLD 18, at the event.

“We must continue our efforts because the needs are still present and more pressing. When we all come together to help, we make a difference and contribute to the prosperity of our communities.”

To date, the Golf Classic has supported more than 1,700 deserving undergraduate and graduate students who rely on financial aid for books, tuition fees and living expenses.

“Golf Classic awards allow students to focus on their education while also affording them more time to pursue what they love or need to do,” said Concordia President and Vice-Chancellor Graham Carr.

More than 200 athletes have received Golf Classic awards, benefiting from extra financial support while training to represent Concordia in competitions.

“Whether it’s in reputation or a sense of community pride, Concordia gains in innumerable ways from the triumphs and successes of our student athletes,” said Carr.

Undergraduate Sara Parker says that winning a Concordia University Golf Classic Award for Student Athletes has allowed her to not only pursue her own ambitions but to help promote other women in sports. 

“The award I was given has provided me with emotional and financial relief, due to my numerous engagements with school and sports. It has allowed me to focus on school, flag football and my clinical internship in athletic therapy without having to worry about the financial stress,” says the Concordia Flag Football Club president.

Golf Classic funds count towards the Campaign for Concordia: Next-Gen Now, the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the university’s history.
