Behind him is the football field where the LA Rams are playing a game." “Concordia taught me to approach challenges with an open mind, to see them as opportunities for innovation rather than obstacles. This has been crucial in PixMob’s journey.”

Vincent Leclerc, BCompSc 03, grew up in the suburbs of Quebec City with a computer scientist dad and mathematician mom — a formidable combination that, when paired with the tough-love encouragement of a high-school art teacher, helped set the Great Concordian on his path.

At what eventually became Concordia’s Department of Design and Computation Arts, Leclerc found an outlet where he could channel his interest in the possible intersections of art and technology. A graduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) further shaped his vision.

“Both experiences taught me to think creatively,” says Leclerc. “I came away inspired by the idea of creating a sense of togetherness at live events using interactive technology.”

At PixMob, the Montreal-based company he founded in 2006, Leclerc and his partners have since revolutionized audience engagement at the likes of Super Bowl halftime shows and Taylor Swift tours.

All told, the company’s immersive LED lighting solutions have been used at more than 2,000 different events around the world. In the summer of 2024 alone, PixMob contributed to some 30 live events a week.

“Given the size of the global audience, the Super Bowl is obviously special,” says Leclerc. “And with artists like Snoop Dogg, Usher and The Weeknd, we have been able to push the limits of what we can do every year.”

An early fascination with events like Burning Man significantly influenced what Leclerc would go on to create at PixMob.

“I’ve always been drawn to large-scale, visceral spectacles that evoke strong emotions in people,” he says.

“PixMob started with a vision I had to unite audiences through technology. It took years to refine that vision, but the journey to get to where we are now has been incredibly rewarding.”

When you reflect on your time as a Concordia student, what stands out?

Vincent Leclerc: Concordia was a pivotal time for me. I came from a background where I hadn’t studied in English before, and Montreal itself was a new experience.

What struck me most was the cultural diversity of the campus. Interacting with people from all over the world, especially through projects in the Computation Arts program, was eye-opening. It wasn’t just about learning — it was about seeing different perspectives and approaches to art and technology.

Working with Joanna Berzowska in her lab was particularly influential. We were at the forefront of wearable electronics, integrating sensors and lights into garments to create art.

What are some of the factors that have enabled your success?

VL: One has been embracing creative thinking in problem-solving. Concordia taught me to approach challenges with an open mind, to see them as opportunities for innovation rather than obstacles. This has been crucial in PixMob’s journey.

Another is the emphasis on cultural diversity. I truly believe that diverse teams are not just beneficial but essential for creativity and business success. When I founded PixMob, I made sure to hire people from different backgrounds to help guide our creative process. It’s turned out to be a huge competitive advantage for us.

What advice do you have for students who may want to follow in your footsteps?

VL: First and foremost, follow your passions. Let them guide your decisions, because passion is what fuels perseverance in the face of challenges. Understand, too, that whether you aspire to be an entrepreneur, an artist or a pioneer in any field, success demands dedication and hard work.

Secondly, seek feedback and listen actively to what people tell you. Outside perspectives will help you refine your ideas. Every interaction is a chance to learn and improve.

Lastly, look beyond your comfort zone to enrich yourself. Travel, explore new horizons and embrace cultural and intellectual diversity. This is what my experience at Concordia taught me.

How does it feel to be a Great Concordian?

VL: It’s a tremendous honour. Concordia played a pivotal role in my journey, and this recognition is a testament to the university’s impact on its alumni. I’m grateful for the opportunities Concordia provided and excited about what lies ahead.

Take pride in our Great Concordians!
