What your pharmacist can do for you

Your pharmacist is able to provide you with services that you used to have to wait to see a doctor or nurse for. Consult this page from the Ordre des pharmaciens du Quebec to learn more; the page is in French, but use the translate extension on your browser if needed.

Your pharmacist can:

• Temporarily renew many prescriptions, until you can see your doctor
  
• Prescribe preventive treatments, for example:
  • You want to quit smoking
  • You need emergency oral birth control medication (Plan B)
  • You want to start birth control without seeing a doctor
    
  • You are pregnant and experiencing nausea and vomiting
  • You want to get pregnant (and need vitamin supplements)
  • You are travelling to a destination where there is a risk of contracting diarrhea, malaria, or altitude sickness
  • You have head lice
• Prescribe medications for certain health conditions such as:
  • Vaginal yeast infections
    
  • Urinary tract infections in women
    
  • Menstrual pain
  • Eczema (mild to moderate)
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Herpes labialis (cold sores)
  • Thrush resulting from the use of a corticosteroidal inhaler
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Canker sores
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Minor acne
  • Diaper rash
• Adjust prescriptions (e.g. the form, the dose, etc.)
• Replace your usual medication with another drug if there is a shortage
  
• Administer a drug to demonstrate its correct use
• Order certain laboratory tests to monitor the effectiveness and safety of your drug therapy
