A message from Concordia Vice-President, Development and External Relations, and Secretary-General Bram Freedman

What a year it’s been for Concordia. Summer’s approach is a time when many wind down, reflect on our accomplishments and rest up before autumn’s busier days.

Several members of the Concordia community were recognized for triumphs. Frederick Bohbot, BA 01, won an Oscar for his short documentary The Lady in Number 6 at the 86th Academy Awards ceremony in March. He was joined on the film’s crew by two fellow alumni, cinematographers Kieran Crilly, BA 03, and Carl Freed, BA 94.

Concordia student Alexandre Bilodeau made history at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, where he won his second gold medal in the moguls competition in February.

Former Concordia Stinger Caroline Ouellette earned her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal when Canada’s women’s hockey team dramatically won the decisive game in Russia. Lisa Haley, BSc 96, an assistant coach on the team, also took home gold.

Concordia grads Angela Grauerholz, MFA 80, and Carol Wainio, MFA 85, distinguished for careers in visual and media art, earned Governor General’s Awards in March.

Concordia alumnus and long-time producer of CBC One’s Ideas Bernard Lucht, BA 66, was invested into the Order of Canada last December. One month later, former Concordia vice-rector John Daniel, MA 96, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

The long list of our community’s accomplishments is astonishing. The Concordia family is growing, too. We recently surveyed 18,000 of our 188,000 graduates. Your input has given us fresh ideas on benefits and services that really resonate with you.

And there are many ways to connect. On September 19, the Shuffle, Concordia’s annual fundraiser for scholarships and bursaries, turns 25. Events like these help us fulfill our mission ― to raise funds for our students. I urge you to join us for this Concordia tradition that has already raised more than $1 million. Lend your support at Giving to Concordia.

After his recent alumni chapter visits to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Vancouver, our president Alan Shepard has reached out to many of you. You can connect with him, too. If you are an international graduate, please consider joining one of our 28 alumni chapters around the globe.

Back home, as Concordia celebrates its 40th anniversary next fall, Homecoming festivities run from September 18 to 22. I invite you to rediscover your alma mater at our class reunions, lectures, sporting events and other great gatherings.

Don’t forget that we’re always happy to hear from you at alumni@concordia.ca.

Keep up with your alma mater via social media, too. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Network with fellow alumni on LinkedIn. Watch us on YouTube and check out event photos on Flickr.

On behalf of your alma mater, enjoy the pleasures of summer. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible as we advance our university together.

My very best wishes,

Bram Freedman
