VCR Curator-in-Residence program

The VCR Curator-in-Residence program will host a Concordia University alum scholar or current Graduate-level student in the Faculty of Fine Arts to curate a collection of films or images that center on marginalized perspectives in cinema and art. The curator will receive a stipend of $2,500 for 75 hours of work.

The Faculty of Fine Arts is taking action to decolonize their curriculums, and the Visual Collections Repository (VCR) wants to provide resources to support and create a more inclusive pedagogy through curated expansions to the collections.

VCR

The Visual Collections Repository (VCR) is an academic resource that provides visual documentation to support the Faculty of Fine Arts' research and teaching needs. VCR maintains an extensive film and slide collection and an archive of works created within the Faculty of Fine Arts. Our mandate of accessibility and preservation ensures long-term use of these materials.

The VCR also promotes cross-disciplinary and collaborative pedagogy by providing a space for exchange between faculty and students. This inviting space showcases the collections (material, analog, digital) and maintains their relevance to research across the university.

Goals

The VCR Curator-in-Residence program will invite a curator to research the moving-image and still-image collections and develop a screening program (five to eight films) or recommend works from 8 different artists/exhibitions/events around a specific gap in the collection.

The resident receives:

  • Access to VCR moving-image and still-image collections.
  • Assistance by the VCR to purchase works from distributors, artists, or galleries.
  • Access to technical support for digitization.
  • The opportunity to connect and network with the wider Concordia community.

By participating in the program, the resident is expected to:

  • Research VCR collections to develop a focused film screening program, including curatorial notes and a list of 5 films to acquire (format and length to be determined) or develop a focused curatorial list and essay with images from 8 artists/exhibitions/events.
  • Assist with the creation of VCR educational resources to promote and share the research.
  • Work with VCR to hold a screening event at a venue, such as the VCR, 4th Space or another location.
  • Provide a tentative schedule at the start of the program.
  • Be available to meet with faculty and students to discuss the research.
  • Communicate regularly with the VCR Supervisor on the progress of the Residency.
  • Please note this is an in-person residency.
