Sequence of events
- Graduates participate in a ceremonial marshaling into the hall, led by Concordia’s Grand Marshal. They are seated as a group in the audience until marshals usher them backstage at the conclusion of speeches.
- Academic procession of faculty and staff take their seats on stage.
- Welcoming remarks from the Dean of Students, faculty Dean, Chancellor, and University President.
- The Honorary Doctorate is awarded.
- The Honoree makes their Convocation address.
- Special Awards are presented (Fall convocation only).
- The faculty’s Valedictorian makes their address.
- Graduates cross the stage; convocation medals and awards announced as winners cross.
- Conferral of degrees.
- Closing remarks and group photo (taken while graduates are seated in the venue).
- Reception.
Instructions for graduates
- Graduates must arrive 1 hour and 15 minutes before the start of their ceremony.
- Graduates must keep their marshaling cards in hand at all times until the moment they cross the stage.
- Graduates receive their diplomas backstage, before they cross. Upon crossing, they will shake hands with a presiding university official and return to their seat.
- Graduates should not leave their personal items on their seat as they will not be returning to the same seat once they cross the stage.
- The procession of graduates takes place according to degree and program. The order of procession by degree may vary by faculty.
- Graduates and their guests are asked to remain in their seats for the entire ceremony.
