Internal degree transfer

Current Concordia University students can transfer to the John Molson School of Business through internal degree transfers. To be eligible, students must meet the minimum requirements and attend a mandatory information session.

Eligibility information

  • To be eligible for an internal degree transfer to John Molson you must be a current Concordia student in a degree program (i.e., BA, BSc, BEng)
  • Internal degree transfers to John Molson are considered for the fall and winter terms only. (Internal degree transfers are not available for summer terms.)
  • All internal degree transfer requirements must be satisfied one full term prior to transfer.
    • For a fall term transfer, all requirements must be met by the end of the previous winter term.
    • For a winter term transfer, all requirements must be met by the end of the previous summer 2 term.
  • The deadline to apply for an internal degree transfer is March 1 for a fall term transfer and November 1 for winter term transfer.

Internal degree transfer requirements as of fall 2024 and onward

Complete a minimum of 12 credits at Concordia University.Achieve a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.70.Achieve a minimum grade of 1.7 (C-) in ECON 201 AND ECON 203. Achieve an average grade of 2.70 (B-) or better in MATH 208 and MATH 209. (Students who have received an exemption for MATH 208 must achieve a minimum grade of 2.70 (B-) in MATH 209, and vice versa.)

NOTE: Students who obtain less than a 1.7 (C-) in any MATH (MATH 208 OR 209 OR equivalent) will not be admitted.

Have completed (or have exemptions) for the following four courses one full term prior to transferring:

  1. ECON 201 – Introduction to Microeconomics
  2. ECON 203 – Introduction to Macroeconomics
  3. MATH 208 – Fundamentals of Mathematics I (Linear Algebra)
  4. MATH 209 – Fundamentals of Mathematics II (Calculus I)
  5. Starting Fall 2024, students admitted with exemptions to MATH 208 and MATH 209 will need COMM 213 with a C- or better and COMM 214 with a B- or better.

Note: Students must complete all four required courses (ECON 201, ECON 203, MATH 208, MATH 209).

Important: Once admitted to Concordia University, any remaining prerequisite courses required for an internal transfer to the John Molson School of Business must be completed at Concordia. Courses you’ve been granted exemptions for will still be recognized, but all other missing requirements must be fulfilled at Concordia University.

Courses available to non-John Molson students in preparation for a transfer

  • MARK 201 Introduction to Marketing. With a minimum grade of C-, this course will apply to the credit core as a COMM 223 equivelent upon successful transfer.
  • COMM 213Computing Visualization Tools for Business Analytics (Corequisite ECON 201 previously or concurrently). With a minimum grade of C-, this course will apply to the credit core upon successful transfer.
  • COMM 214  - Business Analytics (Prerequisite MATH 208 and MATH 209. The following course must be completed previously or concurrently COMM 213).  With a minimum grade of B-, this course will apply to the credit core upon successful transfer. 

 

Courses that will not result in transfer credits or exemptions towards a John Molson degree

If you intend to transfer to John Molson, do not take the following courses:

ACCO 230, ADMI 201, ADMI 202, FINA 230, MANA 201, MANA 202, MANA 298, MANA 300, MANA 211, MANA 213, MANA 266 & INTE 296.

Students in failed standing

  • Students in failed standing must apply for readmission to their current program.
  • Once readmitted students must upgrade their academic standing by completing 24 to 30 credits.
  • Students who have been in failed standing must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.7 for the courses completed after readmission to their program, and meet the requirements 3 and 4 above.
  • Courses completed prior to readmission with a minimum grade of C- (1.7 GPA) will be considered for transfer credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, if your goal is to transfer to John Molson you are not required to take courses that are part of your current program. 

  • If you have an exemption for MATH 203, to be eligible to transfer to John Molson you must complete MATH 209 as well as meet the GPA requirements — see requirement 3 above.
  • If you have an exemption for MATH 204, to be eligible to transfer to John Molson you must complete MATH 208 as well as meet the GPA requirements — see requirement 3 above.
  • An exemption for either MATH 203 or MATH 204 is not sufficient to transfer internally to John Molson.

No, you are not required to retake courses for which you have received an exemption (EX). See your student record to verify what exemptions you have.

  • A minimum grade of 1.7 (C-) must be achieved for courses to be transferred to John Molson.
  • An average grade of 2.70 (B-) or better is required between MATH 208 and MATH 209. (Students who have received an exemption for MATH 208 must achieve a minimum grade of 2.70 (B-) in MATH 209, and vice versa.)
  • As of fall 2024 and onward, a minimum grade of 1.7 (C-) in ECON 201 and ECON 203 will be required. 

If you have not completed an upper-level math course in high school or college, you will have to complete MATH 206 prior to taking MATH 208 and MATH 209.

  • You may take non-John Molson electives, courses that you are interested in and that you believe you will do well in, so that you maintain a CGPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • Consider taking MARK 201. (See Core Courses Available to non-John Molson students above.)

  • Yes, non-John Molson courses with a grade of C- (1.7) or higher may be credited towards the elective component of your John Molson degree.

  • John Molson prerequisite courses (MATH 208, MATH 209, ECON 201, ECON 203 and BTM 200) with a grade of C- (1.7) or higher may be credited toward the elective component of your John Molson degree depending on your program length.

  • All internal degree transfer requirements must be satisfied one term prior to transfer.
  • For a fall term transfer, all requirements must be met by the end of the previous winter term.
  • For a winter term transfer, all requirements must be met by the end of the previous summer 2 term.

No, you may be a part-time student or not taking any courses at all in the term prior to transferring.

  • No, all required documents are already in your file.
  • You are not required to submit any letters of intent or letters of reference.

  • For fall 2023 and winter 2024 admission, students who have opted for a PASS notation for ECON 201 & 203 are eligible to have the credits for these courses transferred to John Molson. 
  • As of fall 2024 and onward, a 1.7/4.3 (C-) is required in at least one economics course and a 'Pass' in the second course is acceptable. 
  • Students are permitted to have a PASS in one of the two MATH prerequisites provided the other MATH prerequisite has a grade of B- (2.7 GPA) or higher. 
  • Depending on the internal degree transfer admission requirements stated above, students may or may not have to retake courses with a PASS notation.

Example of MATH prerequisite scenarios: (Note that in each of the following scenarios, the MATH course can be reversed.)

  1. MATH 208 = B- (2.7 GPA) or higher and MATH 209 = PASS: Student meets requirement 3 above.
  2. MATH 208 = B- (2.7 GPA) or higher and MATH 209 = Exemption (EX): Student meets requirement 3 above.
  3. MATH 208 = Exemption (EX) and MATH 209 = Exemption (EX): Student meets requirement 3 above.
  4. MATH 208 = PASS and MATH 209 = PASS: Student does NOT meet requirement 3 above.
  5. MATH 208 = Exemption (EX) and MATH 209 = PASS: Student does NOT meet requirement 3 above.
  6. MATH 208 = B- (2.7 GPA) or higher and MATH 209 = FAIL: Student does NOT meet requirement 3 above.
  7. MATH 208 = FAIL and MATH 209 = FAIL: Student does NOT meet requirement 3 above.

  • Yes, if your CGPA diminishes in the term immediately prior to transferring, your conditional offer of admission will be rescinded.
  • You may take courses in the term immediately prior to transferring, but you risk decreasing your CGPA.

Commerce (COMM) courses  are reserved for John Molson students; you will not be able to register for COMM courses until officially accepted into a John Molson program.

No, any courses required for admission to the John Molson School of Business that have been completed outside Concordia University will not be accepted, even if they were approved by your current faculty. Taking these courses outside Concordia will nullify your eligibility for admission to the John Molson School of Business.
