Concordia has launched its search for a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Communities.

The position comes with $10 million in funding spread over seven years. Interested candidates must submit their applications to the university before March 15, 2018.

Research and training activities within the university’s new Smart Cities hub will be organized around four interrelated axes: clean energy systems, integrated built environment design, smart technologies, and collaborative knowledge mobilization and policy implications.

Launched in 2008, the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program supports universities’ efforts to build on the country's growing reputation as a global leader in research and innovation.

CERC appointments are among the most prestigious and generous academic awards available in the world. Concordia is one of only nine Canadian institutions to advance in the competition this year.

This is a testament to the university’s growing profile in the area of urban life, says Christophe Guy, vice-president of Research and Graduate Studies. “Concordia’s researchers are reimagining and reinventing ways in which we dwell in and develop metropolitan areas.”

The funding is conditional upon the hiring of a chair holder. The new CERC will build on Concordia’s existing strengths in the areas of net-zero and energy-efficient buildings, clean and renewable energy, sustainable environmental engineering, information systems, urban planning and integrated design, and climate science.

To enhance expertise in these areas, five new tenure-track faculty members will also be hired.
