Marc Lafrance

Special Advisor to the Provost on Campus Life

Marc Lafrance is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, which he joined in 2008. He served as Department Chair from 2022 to 2024, then as interim Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, before being appointed Special Advisor to the Provost on Campus Life.

Drawing on his interdisciplinary background in the humanities and social sciences, Lafrance studies the relationship between self, body, and society; representations of gender and sexuality in the media; men’s health and well-being; and identity politics in an age of political polarisation. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and edited collections, maintaining an active research profile funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. A dedicated teacher, Lafrance is the recipient of the Sociology and Anthropology Student Union Award for Best Professor and attracts large numbers of graduate students from around the world.

As Special Advisor to the Provost on Campus Life, Lafrance engages in a variety of activities intended to bring Concordia’s community members together. He meets with community members on a regular basis to facilitate communication between students, staff, faculty, and the university administration. He also serves as a conduit of information, consulting community members on campus dynamics and raising awareness around issues of concern.
