Disclosing your invention

If you believe that you have developed an invention with commercial potential, you need to submit a Declaration of Invention (DOI) form to the Office of Research.  A DOI is a confidential document that describes your invention and states whether the invention is an independent invention or a qualifying invention.

A qualifying invention is any new and useful art, process, methodology, technique, machine, manufacture or composition of matter, developed in the course of your university duties and with the use of university funds, facilities, staff and/or students. If it is demonstrated that your invention works as intended, data or a prototype that shows your idea is valid and has technical and commercial potential, the university may choose to assume the financial and management responsibility for obtaining intellectual property (IP) protection, negotiating assignments or licensing for the commercialization of the invention. 

Prior to submitting a DOI, please review Concordia’s IP policy to familiarize yourself with the rules relating to IP ownership, split of revenues and options for independent commercialization.  

You should consult with our team in the early stages of the discovery so that we can guide you through the technology transfer process.

Please contact us before publication or other forms of public disclosure of your invention (ex: presentation, website description, etc.) as this may jeopardize the protection, including patentability, of your invention.
