Named Research Organizations
Guidelines for Named Research Organizations.
Under the Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) policy, research funding proposals to the Tri-Agencies — Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) — will be denied if researchers involved have links to or have received support from any organization affiliated with military, defence or state security entities considered threats to Canada's national security.
This policy encompasses the following two lists:
In alignment with STRAC, researchers engaging in grant-funded projects within sensitive technology areas must consult the list of Named Research Organizations. This list identifies research bodies considered to pose a significant risk to Canada's national security through their direct or indirect connections with military, national defence or state security entities.
The Named Research Organizations list is continually updated to reflect the changing nature of global threats to Canada’s national security.
It is essential for researchers to recognize that entities not listed could still represent a security risk. You are advised to exercise due diligence to minimize any risks related to collaborations or partnerships in sensitive technological fields. Researchers should share all their affiliations, received funding and in-kind contributions with their sponsoring institutions and research teams. This approach aims to build trust and help safeguard sensitive research from undesirable dissemination of knowledge and technology.
