STRAC Policy

Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC).

To qualify for research grants in a Sensitive Technologies Research Area (STRA) from the Tri-Agencies — Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) — each applicant listed on the grant proposal must submit a personal declaration stating their lack of affiliations with or financial or in-kind support from any entities listed on the Named Research Organizations list.

A person is deemed affiliated with any entity where they are employed, hold an appointment or engage in research activities. If someone is affiliated with multiple entities, all affiliations must be disclosed and assessed for adherence to this policy. Funding and in-kind support refers to both financial aid and non-financial contributions such as, but not limited to, products, equipment, materials, professional services, access to facilities (such as office space or laboratories) and technologies including software and databases.

Tri-Agency funding will not be awarded for projects listed under STRA if any researcher involved is affiliated with an entity on the Named Research Organizations list. This policy will be enforced as of May 1, 2024.

The STRAC Policy and CFI Research Security webpages will be updated regularly as new research security measures are implemented by the federal granting agencies.
