Rocketry Division scores 1st-place prize in Base 11 Space Challenge’s phase 2
In 2019, Space Concordia’s Rocketry Division entered the Base 11 Space Challenge, a race to build the first civilian liquid-fuelled rocket to surpass 100 kilometres in altitude. The team that places first walks away with bragging rights and $1 million USD.
The Base 11 Space Challenge is judged in three phases. Competing with 35 of the top universities in North America, the Concordia team earned a $15,000 USD second-place prize for the preliminary design.
For phase two, the team placed first after submitting its critical design review. The winning submission included a 1,600-page report outlining the rocket and its systems and documenting the team’s thought process and analysis from start to finish. The Concordia team began prepping for the final competition phase — a 100-kilomtre altitude launch.
Charlotte Savage lands on the 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 list
While still a year away from completing her degree from the Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science, Charlotte Savage raised $5 million in seed funding for tech startup HaiLa Technologies.
For helping develop HaiLa’s novel radio technology, Savage, the company’s chief innovation officer, landed on the 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 list. The technology allows sensor data to ride existing signals in the air, drastically reducing the carbon footprint by eliminating the need for power-hungry radios, which typically use energy to emit signals from the sensor itself to transmit data.
Scholar receives major Universities Art Association of Canada award
Shaya Ishaq earns first Black Perspectives Office research fellowship
Shaya Ishaq, an interdisciplinary artist and undergraduate student in the Fibres and Material Practices program, became the first recipient of a research fellowship from Concordia’s Black Perspectives Office.
Ishaq is also a research fellow with the Textiles and Materiality Research Cluster as part of the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. Her research taps into Afrofuturism, “a launchpad for conceptual thinking and worldbuilding for me,” she says.
Désirée Rochat
New experts in residence
Concordia Library welcomed Désirée Rochat, BA 09, community educator and transdisciplinary scholar, as its researcher-in-residence. “I work to preserve histories of Black diasporic activism,” she says.
Accomplished social innovator Anie Rouleau, founder and CEO of The Unscented Company, was named entrepreneur-in-residence at the John Molson School of Business.
Students earn Rhodes Scholarship and Schwarzman Scholar honours
BSc in chemistry undergrad Sabine Plummer was awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. In October 2022 she will join more than 100 international scholars at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and become part of a global community determined to make a positive difference in the world. “Oxford also is home to such rich art history and I will get to live it,” she says.
Aiden Cyr was named Concordia’s first Schwarzman Scholar and will pursue a master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. “Focusing on Indigenous relations, particularly with regards to climate change and gender-based violence, has been my passion,” he says.
