Funding

All incoming graduate students are automatically considered for all available major awards. Returning students are invited to submit applications during the winter term.

Graduate awards

The following list of graduate awards is not exhaustive.

It is strongly recommended that fellowship applicants for SSHRC and FQRSC awards submit a draft, or drafts, of their proposals to their thesis/essay supervisor or other relevant faculty and consult with the GPD about the nature of this year’s competition. Applications should be submitted to the Department of History.

Awarded, in memory of a former doctoral student, through competition on the basis of academic excellence and community service to a full-time graduate student in the History department. Applications available through the History department.

$500 application

The bursary is awarded to a graduate student in based on academic merit and financial need. Research should be in the areas of either women's or gender history. It is awarded alternate years to a graduate and undergraduate student. It may be awarded to a full-time or part-time student.

All applications and recommendation letters MUST be submitted electronically to FQRSC and applicants MUST submit the cover page, the official transcripts, the copy of medicare card, as well as the copy of IMM1000 (for Permanent residents only), to the Graduate Awards Office (M-205) by 4 p.m. on 10 October (MA students) and 11 October (PhD students).  At the time of application, a candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and have been a resident of Quebec for at least one year. Both master’s and doctoral students are eligible. The MA competition requires a minimum 3.7 CGPA.

Duration: To a maximum of three years.

Six scholarships are available for graduate students in Canadian Irish Studies through application to the Canadian Centre for Irish Studies. The scholarships are to be granted on the basis of academic excellence to full-time or part-time students pursuing graduate work on an Irish or Irish Canadian subject in any program at Concordia University.

Open to new admissions only at the Master's or Doctoral level. There are no citizenship restrictions for university fellowships.

Awarded annual to a student in History who has been admitted to candidacy for the PhD and who exhibits both need and a sound research project.  In the absence of a suitable candidate at the doctoral level, MA applicants will be considered.

The FQRSC offers a Merit Scholarship program for foreign students wishing to pursue doctoral (V1) and post-doctoral (V2) work in Québec. The details of this are not available right now, but any non-Canadians should keep this in mind.

The Concordia Centre for Broadcasting Studies has an annual graduate fellowship for students intending to make use of the extensive BBC archives available at the CCBS.

Teaching assistantship

Open annual competition through a letter of application. All full-time graduate students and new applicants for full-time study (be they master's or doctoral students) are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Teaching assistantships may not normally be held concurrently with other major awards such as FQRSC or SSHRC. No citizenship conditions apply. Normally doctoral students may expect two years of TA funding; MA students will be funded as far as possible. MA students are not considered if they are beyond the second year of study in the program.

Conference funding

Full-time students who are travelling to give a paper at a scholarly conference are eligible to receive some funding assistance from the department and from the Dean of Arts and Science (funding ranges from $200 to $500, depending on the location of conference).
