Biography

Mark A. Russell obtained his Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He joined the Liberal Arts College in 2002. His scholarship has focused on the history of Imperial Germany, especially its visual culture and merchant shipping, and the history of Southern Italy. His writing has appeared in The Historical Journal; Central European History; German History; The International Journal of Maritime History; Italian Studies; the Journal of Art Historiography; and the Canadian Journal of History. He has also published two books: Between Tradition and Modernity: Aby Warburg and the Public Purposes of Art in Hamburg, 1896-1918 (New York and Oxford, 2007); and Steamship Nationalism. Ocean Liners and National Identity in Imperial Germany and the Atlantic World (London and New York, 2020). He is currently pursuing an interest in the pictorial representation of Southern Italy, especially the city of Matera, in the context of Italian political, social, and cultural history prior to the First World War.
