Concordia provides recommendations on welcoming international students in response to Bill 74
On November 5, Concordia University submitted a brief in response to the Government of Quebec’s call for consultations on Bill 74, which aims to establish a new framework for the number of international students in Quebec.
In its document, Concordia makes several specific recommendations, including that any new legislation exempts universities from limits or reductions on international enrolment; considers the historically positive role of these students in Quebec; and undertakes a comparative analysis on the impact of proposed changes prior to their implementation.
At the invitation of the Commission des relations avec les citoyens, President Graham Carr also presented Concordia’s recommendations at the National Assembly. Appearing alongside the president of Bishop’s University, he reiterated the benefits of international students for Quebec, specifically how they provide a valuable talent pool of highly skilled workers and play a crucial role in research and development.
“Now, more than ever, is the time to show that Quebec is a welcoming society,” says Carr, “and to highlight the contributions of international students to our economy and society.”
