Mitacs Globalink Research Internships
Information for Globalink interns coming to Concordia University
Congratulations on your successful application to the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) program. We look forward to welcoming you to Concordia University.
What happens next
- Globalink Research Interns come to Concordia as Academic Visitors. Please review the Policy on Academic Visitors (VPRGS-10) for more information on the Academic Visitor status.
- After Mitacs has confirmed your placement at Concordia, your host professor submits a Mitacs Academic Visitor form to Concordia International. Your host supervisor or Concordia International may contact you if there is any missing information to complete the form.
- Once the Mitacs Academic Visitor form is received by Concordia International, you will get an invitation letter outlining the details of your placement at Concordia. Ensure that you sign and return the Acceptance Form to Concordia International.
- Contact academic-access@concordia.ca with a copy of your invitation letter to receive Academic Visitor access at Concordia.
- With your Academic Visitor access, you will receive:
- An Employee ID number
- A Concordia University Netname
- A Concordia University email account
- A letter will be sent to you from academic-access@concordia.ca with the credentials and information about your access and available services (ie. Wi-Fi, online Library and in-person Library access, shuttle bus service, etc.)
- You are responsible for obtaining any travel documents to visit Canada. For more information regarding immigration, please visit the Mitacs immigration processing resource. Any questions related to the immigration process should be directed to Mitacs at helpdesk@mitacs.ca.
Before you leave
- Confirm your internship dates with your Concordia academic supervisor.
- Attend the virtual pre-departure session with Concordia International. You will receive a zoom invitation.
- Check if your internship is at the Sir George Williams (downtown campus) or Loyola campus so that you know where to go on your first day.
- Once you know when you will be arriving, contact your supervising professor to schedule an appointment to meet and visit the location where you will be doing your research internship.
Arriving in Montreal
- Your supervisor will coordinate with the department to get you access to the lab, office where you will be doing your internship.
- A Mitacs mentor will contact you for support during your internship in Canada.
- Please note: Many university services (e.g. Library, health services) and administrative offices will have different opening hours during the summer. Check the specific department/office webpage ahead of time to make sure it is open when you plan to go.
Getting to campus
- Montreal has a network of four subway lines (known as the metro) and nearly 200 hundred bus routes serves 2.5 million riders a day on the Island of Montreal. That makes it the mostly heavily used transit system in Canada.
- The green line of the metro runs directly below the Sir George Williams Campus downtown, stopping at Station Guy-Concordia. A network of tunnels connects most buildings on campus to the metro.
- Montreal has 700 kilometres of bike paths. The public bike sharing system Bixi was born here.

Opening a Canadian bank account
To open a bank account, go to the “New Accounts” department at a bank. A bank employee will explain the different types of accounts and the costs and services associated with each type of account. It is a good idea to check with several banks to determine which bank offers the best account for your needs. In most banks, it is possible to open a bank account by showing your passport and your Concordia invitation letter. You may also be asked to show a copy of your apartment lease as proof of residency in Montreal.

- Desjardins Group
- Laurentian Bank
- Royal Bank of Canada

Where to stay
- Finding accommodations in Montreal can be easy and inexpensive when compared to other major North American cities. To get started on finding out how to search for an apartment in Montreal, go to Concordia's renting in Montreal webpage.
- Check out the Concordia Discover Montreal series that has a short video on each Montreal neighbourhood.
- Depending on your internship dates, you may also be able to request on-campus housing. For more information, please visit the Grey Nuns Residence : Summer Stays.
