Career exploration
Career exploration is an ongoing process of asking yourself what’s next and planning how you’re going to get there.
Explore your career and academic path
During university, intentional career exploration can help you progress in your academic journey, define and accomplish your goals, make decisions, find opportunities and overcome obstacles along the way.
This doesn’t mean choosing a single path and sticking with it! You will continually make career decisions throughout your life, as you change and adapt to new situations.
These resources can help you get started in your career exploration.

Make connections in the field
Talking to people in the field will help you gain valuable insights that might not be available through other sources.
You can ask them about:
- Their main tasks, and what a typical day looks like
- Their work environment (location, hours, how they collaborate with others, etc.)
- The skills, personal characteristics, and/or education background required succeed in their work
- What they like most about their work
- What led them to pursue this type of work
- What has helped them get to where they are now
- What advice they have for you as a university student considering this field
To connect with people in a field that interests you, you might attend a career planning event.
Career advisors can also give you tips on networking, including how make connections on LinkedIn.
