Bill Varvaris
Mr. Varvaris holds a BA in Political Science from Concordia University with a diploma from the School of Community and Public Affairs, and an Honours BA in Law from Carleton University. He also has a Business Certificate from the Japan Market Expansion Program, Tokyo, Japan.
After his academic studies, Bill Varvaris began his professional employment as a policy advisor to the Minister of Natural Resources Canada in the mid 1990’s and reached the post of Chief of Staff to the Minister of Industry.
In 2006, Bill entered the federal public service and currently serves as Director General at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He is responsible for the Real Property and Environmental Management Directorate which oversees the third largest real estate portfolio within the Government of Canada.
Previously, Bill served as Director in the Real Property Branch at the Department of Public Works and Government Services Canada (currently known as Public Services and Procurement Canada). Bill was seconded for two years (2012-2014) at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (currently known as Global Affairs Canada) and was posted to New Delhi, India, responsible for a variety of real property projects in South Asia. For a period of 3 years commencing in 2009, Bill served as the Executive Director at the Canadian Chambers of Commerce in Japan, based in Tokyo.
Of special note – Bill is married to a former SCPA alumna, Kathleen Donohue, they live in Ottawa and have two children.
