Tyra Maria Trono

Photography

Tyra Maria Trono's research constitutes a deeply personal exploration of their profound connection to Tiohtià:ke/Montreal's diverse Côte-des-Neiges area—a historic immigrant neighborhood where her parents settled in the late 1980s. Their recent project examines Plaza Côte-des-Neiges, a culturally rich mall that's facing challenges due to gentrification. Trono's objective is to capture the evolving essence of this space, endeavoring to preserve its cultural significance within their memory. Beyond the mall, their work extends to various settings in the neighborhood. The thematic core of family assumes prominence in their practice, focusing on heritage, culture, and identity. Through their creative expression, Trono delves into family histories, emphasizing the profound importance of familial gatherings in shaping a sense of belonging within the community. Their art serves as an invitation for viewers to actively engage with an evolving narrative, prompting reflection on the dynamic cultural landscape and celebrating the diverse human experience—all while adeptly bridging the past and the present.
