Students at a school in Montreal have participated in workshops on online hate conducted by Project Someone, a research team based at Concordia University. The school invited the team to conduct the workshops, which aimed to build resilience against hate speech and violent radicalization online.
Safia Boufalaas and Emma Huebner, members of Project Someone, developed a concise two-hour hands-on curriculum as an extension to the Explore Your Echo curriculum that was developed last year (read our story about it). These workshops taught students about algorithms, echo chambers, and how hate occurs online. In addition, students engaged in group discussions centered on media analysis of scenarios addressing transphobia, misogyny, sexism, discrimination, racism, and more.
The workshops were highly interactive, allowing students to gain a better understanding of online hate and participate in meaningful discussions. The sessions were successful in promoting digital literacy and building resilience against hate speech.
