Upon returning from India, he obtained several law degrees from McGill University and became a member of the Québec Bar. He has collaborated in writing two books on international maritime law.

For almost 25 years, he was director of social justice ministry at the Catholic Archdiocese of Montreal, where he was involved in promoting human rights, working with community organizations, promoting eco-justice, assisting refugee claimants and asylum seekers, and accompanying victims of crime and offenders in restorative justice practices. He was a member of the Regional Advisory Committee for the Truth & Reconciliation Commission on Indigenous Residential Schools. He has written and lectured extensively about this.
