Biography
A native of Poland, Anna Szpilberg has concertized throughout Europe and North America in solo recitals, with chamber music ensembles and orchestras. These include: guest artist on tour with members of the Fine Arts Quartet; joint recitals with violinists Marie Anick Nicolas and Vladimir Landsman; Guest soloist (Gina Bachauer International Competition Festival) and two solo tours of Poland, a filmed documentary from Chopin's home at Zelazowa Wola, at the invitation of the Frederic Chopin Society, and a recital recorded for Polish National Radio.
Anna Szpilberg was featured in two documentary films on Concordia's Leonardo Research Project: Beyond 2000 for Australian Television aired in 82 countries and Shaping the Invisible for the Discovery Channel (Canada)
As co-founder and Associate Director of the International Music Session (Grenoble, France) Ms. Szpilberg taught chamber music, conducted master classes and seminars and performed in solo concerts and chamber ensembles with distinguished artist/performers representing 13 countries (Europe and North America).
She holds a Diploma in Piano Performance from State School of Music (Poland) -Warsaw - with Jerzy Lefeld Chopin scholar, Bachelor of Music -with Distinction -McGill Faculty of Music, Graduate Diploma in Advanced Music Performance Studies at Concordia - with Philip Cohen, followed by a PhD.SIP Concordia University. Prof. Cohen remains her primary musical-pedagogical influence and consultant in the preparation of her concerts.
Awards: Canada Council Artist Award, Academy Scholarship -Banff Advanced Music Program, FCAR Doctoral Fellowship.
Her Doctoral Thesis - "Timing the Muse: creating the musical experience, expressively directed micro timing and the pianist's signature voice" is aimed at establishing the groundwork for a general theory of highly accomplished musical performance.
Her recording features the music of Bach-Busoni, Scarlatti, Granados, de Falla and Ravel.
As a long-term member of Concordia undergraduate and graduate music programs Anna Szpilberg has taught piano and chamber music as well as the repertoire and literature of performance. Her graduate students include subsequent prizewinners in international piano competitions, launched successful carrier as professional musicians.
As Artist-in-Residence in the University's Leonardo Research Project she has contributed to many "on stage" explorations into individual achievement in performance, it's nature and professional development.
