February is Preventative Health Awareness Month in Canada! Février est le Mois de la sensibilisation à la santé préventive!
We will be posting tips and advice from several of the different disciplines present here at the School of Health over the month.
Week of February 17th: Sleep
Sleep loss is common in our 24/7 modern society. There's growing evidence to suggest that inadequate sleep is linked to a whole host of health-related risks (for example, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.) as well as learning and memory challenges. Many things can contribute to a lack of sleep in otherwise healthy individuals. Work schedules, stress and lifestyle factors affect the amount of sleep we get.
Week of February 10th: Nutrition
We tend to focus on problems relating to eating too much, but undernutrition is also a potential concern for some people.
Undernutrition is a form of malnutrition can affect individuals of all ages, but the elderly are particularly vulnerable due to several risk factors.
Week of February 3rd: Fall Prevention
Reducing Fall Risks This Winter
With winter still upon us, outdoor falls are a common occurrence, often leading to fractures, back injuries, and whiplash - especially in older adults. Preventing falls is key to maintaining mobility and quality of life.
To support fall prevention efforts, the Concordia University School of Health Athletic Therapy Internship Clinic has developed a Senior Health and Fall Risk Prevention Package. This program is designed to help older adults improve their stability and reduce their risk of serious falls.
