The long-awaited winter break is finally here. Congratulations on getting through your first term! Now it’s time to relax and enjoy yourselves while watching the snow fall. Here are four Welcome Crew tips from Divyena to get the most out of your upcoming time off:
1. Don’t let the cold stop you from going out
Get your winter coat and boots ready — it’s time to get some fresh air and recharge your batteries. Is this your first winter in Montreal? We know it’s tempting to stay in. But you probably spent the majority of your days before the break at home or school. Take time to explore all the winter-themed events available throughout December.
Enjoy the holiday concerts and theatrical events, sticky maple taffy, and of course, the festive lights in the city. If you've never skated at the Old Port, Beaver Lake or Jean-Drapeau Park, or gone snowshoeing on Mont Royal — now’s your chance!
2. It’s RESOLUTION time — refine your skills
You know what they say: new year, new me. There isn't a better time than the winter break to invest in your interests. The options are endless.
Wanted to read a book but didn't have enough time? Read it! Wanted to practice and play the guitar with your friends? Practice it. Or learn how to cook or bake different meals. Having tried-and-true recipes handy is a great way to start your next term right.
And if you're looking to give back while picking up some new skills consider volunteering in the community. From working with youth to animal rescue initiatives, the LIVE Centre has many volunteer opportunities that you can sign up for during the holidays.
3. Catch up on tasks and check your degree progress
Take advantage of the winter break to reflect and do some degree planning to make sure you’re on the right track with your program. For example, looking for summer internships, Co-op opportunities or planning a student exchange abroad can give you things to look forward to.
You can even add to your resume and brush up on your skills by signing up for Udemy courses provided to Concordia students for free.
4. Take time to decompress — you deserve it
It’s the holidays! The most important thing is to be with your loved ones. If anything, this year has taught us to appreciate the here and now. Take these weeks to decompress because you deserve it after all the hours of classes and studying. Watch a movie on Netflix, read books or call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Since you’ll be spending more time indoors, it’s the perfect moment to adjust your space in budget-friendly ways such as getting cozy blankets, scented candles or plants. And don’t forget to treat yourself to some hot cocoa and holiday goodies!
