Position requirements
- University degree
- Translation fluency in Romani (preferable if more than one dialect) and English/French
- Fluency in other languages, preferably Slavic and Romance languages
- Extensive experience with MS Office applications and with Zoom
- Significant knowledge and experience working on initiatives or projects in diverse Romani contexts
- Demonstrated experience conducting interviews for research purposes, including designing interview questions, conducting structured or semi-structured interviews, and synthesizing insights from interview data
- Familiarity with ethical considerations and best practices in qualitative data collection is a plus.
Description of job duties
The ideal candidate for the Research Assistant position is expected to leverage their expertise in Romani and other languages, and their experience translating for and collaborating on initiatives with Roma, to assist conducting multilingual interviews on-site and online for the “Translating Romani Voices” project. The project to gather interviews lasts over a period of several months.
Key responsibilities include the following:
- Assist principal investigator (PI) in circulating multilingual project questionnaire through selected networks
- Coordinate selection, scheduling, preparation, and participation of interviewees with the PI
- Complete TCPS Core Certification course for research ethics
- Conduct 1-hour semi-structured audio interviews independently and process interview data in collaboration with the PI according to university approved ethics protocol
- Assist the PI, when necessary, with translation of interviews conducted
- Submit weekly update to the PI for planning and post-processing purposes
