Interdisciplinary studies
Evolving with the world around us
Push the boundaries of your academic journey
We provide interdisciplinary opportunities through interdisciplinary programs, individually structured programs, elective groups, microprograms and interdisciplinary courses.
Our interdisciplinary studies options broaden your academic experience beyond a single program and span disciplines from scientific to humanistic.
Interdisciplinary majors incorporate classes from across a variety of disciplines while interdisciplinary minors and elective groups enable students to complement their core program in innovative ways.
Interdisciplinary courses are designed to illuminate principles, methods and skills that cross disciplinary boundaries and expand the range of your academic training. While some interdisciplinary courses are located within the Interdisciplinary Studies unit (INTE), others are located in the 27 academic units of the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Our interdisciplinary opportunities
Interdisciplinary programs
Interdisciplinary programs, including majors, minors, certificates and microprograms, combine interrelated courses across academic units in the Faculty of Arts and Science to create new opportunities to study emerging issues and answer fundamental questions in multifaceted ways.
FAS offers interdisciplinary programs in a wide range of areas at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including:
Elective groups
These packages of undergraduate courses range from 12 to 18 credits and provide depth of knowledge and skills development in a specific area of interest.
Examples of the elective groups we offer include:
Microprograms
We designed these short programs to provide specialized training to those looking to gain new skills that span beyond one discipline. Our microprograms help target new and evolving opportunities in the job market and normally last one or two terms, ranging from 9 to 15 credits.
Interdisciplinary courses
While many departments in FAS are inherently interdisciplinary and offer courses that cross academic borders, we also offer courses in Interdisciplinary Studies (INTE codes) that take an interdisciplinary approach and may be recommended and/or required for different programs.
