Anti-Arab Racism and Islamophobia subcommittee

The Anti-Arab Racism and Islamophobia (AARI) subcommittee of the STRIVE Task Force is gathering information about concerns and experiences related to bias, prejudice, discrimination, intimidation, harassment, ostracization, surveillance, profiling, retaliation, and/or violence against Arabs and Muslims at Concordia, as well as the general ways in which forms of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab erasure, exclusion, and aggression are manifested and experienced on campus.

Call to participate

We invite current staff, faculty and students (including those who graduated in 2024) to share their concerns or experiences related to these issues at Concordia. Your participation, whether in person or via email, will help inform the work and approaches of the committee as well as our policy recommendations.

We invite participation from those with direct experience and also those who have observed structural and identity-based violence (broadly defined) related to Anti-Arab Racism and Islamophobia on campus.

Ways to participate

To gather as much information as possible, we are providing different ways for people to engage with and contribute to the work of the Anti-Arab Racism and Islamophobia subcommittee.

Listening sessions

We are holding regular listening sessions over the fall 2024 and winter 2025 terms. The listening sessions are, first and foremost spaces of community, respect, and active and empathetic listening. The experiences and perspectives shared at listening sessions will also be used in the writing of the AARI subcommittee’s report (the identities of all participants will be kept strictly confidential).

Listening sessions are offered in different formats:

  • Group conversations in which the AARI subcommittee invites broad community engagement
  • One-on-one meetings organized upon request
  • Group sessions: if you represent a community group, or for those who would like to speak to us as a self-organized group

The first listening session will be held in person on Friday, October 25, 2024. Pariticpants will receive information about the location after registering.

Share your experiences in writing

If you prefer to share your concerns and experiences in writing, we invite you to do so by filling out a confidential form. You can also send an email. If you choose to send an email, you must first read and sign this consent form, and return the form by email alongside your submission, as it will be incorporated into the subcommittee's work.

Your participation and feedback are crucial to the work of STRIVE. Thank you for your contribution in helping us understand the scope and effects of AARI at Concordia.
