Education Cross-Program Courses

Description:

This course prepares students to interpret and critique literature from a variety of the major research traditions in education. Students make
connections between epistemology and education research; evaluate
methods and data collection approaches in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research; and explore ethical considerations in
research. Laboratory work is provided to give students practical
experience with research tasks.

Component(s):

Lecture; Laboratory

Notes:

  • Students who have received credit for APLI 660 or ETEC 640 may not take this course for credit.

Prerequisite/Corequisite:

The following course must be completed previously: EDUC 6000 or equivalent. If the prerequisite is not satisfied, permission of department is required.

Description:

This course provides a detailed examination of experimental design
issues in education research. Topics include hypothesis testing, power of statistical tests, parametric and non-parametric techniques, t-tests, and analysis of variance. Laboratory work is provided to give students practical experience with using statistical analysis programs.

Component(s):

Lecture; Laboratory

Notes:

  • Students who have received credit for CHST 605 may not take this course for credit.

Prerequisite/Corequisite:

The following course must be completed previously: EDUC 6000 or equivalent. If the prerequisite is not satisfied, permission of department is required.

Description:

This course introduces students to the philosophy, principles, and approaches in qualitative inquiry in education. It focuses on the main methodologies of inquiry that are necessary for conducting and interpreting qualitative data in education research. The course covers techniques for addressing qualitative research questions in the field, including gathering, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data, as well as communicating results. Appropriate methods for the coding and analysis of qualitative data are covered, with laboratory work to support students’ practical experience with qualitative data.

Component(s):

Lecture; Laboratory

Notes:

  • Students who have received credit for CHST 606 may not take this course for credit.

Prerequisite/Corequisite:

The following course must be completed previously: EDUC 6001 or equivalent. If the prerequisite is not satisfied, permission of department is required.

Description:

This course builds on the material presented in EDUC 6001, and
covers topics such as generalized linear models, linear and logistic
regression, factor analysis, structural equation modelling, multiple
group models, and multilevel modelling. Laboratory work is provided
to give students experience using statistical analysis programs.

Component(s):

Lecture; Laboratory

Notes:

  • Students who have received credit for EDUC 806 may not take this course for credit

Prerequisite/Corequisite:

The following courses must be completed previously: EDUC 6002 ; ESTU 615 or ADIP 540 or equivalent. If the prerequisite is not satisfied, permission of department is required.

Description:

The course objective is to deepen students’ knowledge of qualitative methodologies in education. The aim is to expand familiarity with qualitative methods and techniques, further develop the ability to use them in qualitative research, and to critically assess different qualitative approaches. The course also covers the specific challenges involved in field research and the ethical problems associated with qualitative research, including strategies to address those problems.

Component(s):
