Postdoctoral Researcher – Immigration, Information, and Technologies

Location: Concordia University, Montreal, Canada
Hours per week: Monday to Friday, during office hours
Duration: Three (3) years, subject to satisfactory performance. Extension possible, based on funding availability.
Salary: $70,000 per year, plus benefits (see below)

Description and context

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the direction of Mireille Paquet (Department of Political Science and Institute for Research on Migration and Society) and her team, contributing to various projects within the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF): research program, Migrant Integration in the Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides

Researchers specializing in migration studies (any social science discipline) with experience in qualitative or quantitative research are invited to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with skills in quantitative social science text analysis or computational social science.

Research themes supported by this Postdoctoral funding include:

  • How immigrants access information on immigration opportunities in Canada
  • The role of social media and new technologies in migration decisions to Canada
  • The evolution of the "migration industry" in Canada and globally 

This postdoctoral position is for three years, conditional upon satisfactory performance, with potential for extension based on available funding.

The postdoctoral researcher must reside in Montreal and work full-time at Concordia University throughout the appointment period.

Canadian citizenship or permanent residency is not required for this position.

Roles and responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to collective projects related to Bridging Divides, as well as conduct independent research.

They will present and publish research results linked to Bridging Divides, both collectively and individually, and participate in knowledge mobilization activities.

The researcher will have no teaching responsibilities unless requested for professional development. However, they may be invited to participate in training sessions with the research team.

The postdoctoral researcher will have an office and administrative support at Concordia University. 

They will be integrated into the full research ecosystem on immigration at Concordia, including the Research Team on Immigration in Quebec and Beyond (ERIQA), the Institute for Research on Migration and Society (IRMS), and the Immigration Research Initiative (IRI).

Job requirements

  • Ph.D. in social sciences with a specialization in migration studies (candidates near degree completion are encouraged to apply, but proof of progress will be required before the position is offered)
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to work independently

Will be considered an asset:

  • Training and experience in quantitative text analysis or computational social science
  • Training in project management
  • Bilingualism (French and English), spoken and written

Salary and benefits

  • Annual salary of $70,000, plus benefits (sick leave, life insurance, parental leave, and pension plan)
  • Funding for conference participation (registration, travel, etc.), upon validation of the work plan with the supervisor
  • Funding for relevant training, upon validation of the work plan with the supervisor
  • Access to professional development tools and resources for postdoctoral researchers at Concordia University
