Semini Kushara Nawalage

PhD Student

Junior Associate

Loyola Sustainability Research Centre

Semini's research interests are in forest community ecology, floral phylogeny, forest restoration, and ecosystem sustainability. She completed her Master's in Industrial and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka in 2021 and her B.Sc. (Honors) in Environmental Conservation and Management in 2017 from the same university.
Semini's current research involves the development of phylogenetic trees and the investigation of the microbiotic rhizosphere to build understanding of above- and below-ground carbon storage patterns in the tropical rainforest in terms of global climate contribution. More specifically, this study will examine variation of these factors within different forest dynamic regions such as pristine tropical rainforests, home gardens, plantations, urban parks, etc.
Semini has also done research in the areas of sustainable rural water supply systems, ecotoxicology, and environmental pollution.Semini is working under the supervision of Professor Selvadurai Dayanandan in the Department of Biology at Concordia University.

The working title of Semini's thesis is Insights into tropical forest dynamics; floral phylogeny, rhizosphere microbiomic and global carbon contribution.
