Valérie's research focuses on the use by mammals of water culverts and bridges underneath main roads in the Laurentides area of Quebec. These structures could be helping mammals cross roads safely, which would decrease landscape fragmentation. Should these structures work for mammal use, they would be a cheaper alternative to building new wildlife crossing structures, and they could be included in a larger road mitigation measure plan for the Laurentides. For this research, Valerie partnered with Éco-corridors laurentiens, a local NGO whose aim is to improve ecological corridors and connectivity. Valerie also holds a B. Sc. with a specialization in environment from Concordia University. She has previously researched existing crossing structures in the Eastern Townships area of Quebec.

Valérie is studying in the Department or Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University under the supervision of Dr. Jochen Jaeger.

The working title of Valérie's thesis is Mammal use of large existing crossing structures under roads in the Laurentides: Light at the end of the tunnel?
