By: Jack Bordan, October 1966
Mr. Chancellor:
I present to you Omand McKillop Solandt, B.A, M.A, M.D, D.Sc., LL.D. Dr. Solandt has been honoured by many universities for his outstanding achievements as a Scientist, as a Soldier, and a Director of Activities of Scientists and Engineers. He has been recognized by professional bodies by being named an honorary Memeber of the Engineering Institiute of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and recipient of the Gold Medal of the Professional Institute of Public Service of Canada. He has been honoured by Goverments with the award of the Order of British Empire and the United States Medal of Freedom.
It was not at all surprising therefore, to those among us who knew him personally or by reputation, to find that shortly after his appointment to the Board of Governors of Sir George Williams University he was named Chairman of the planning Committee and subsequently Vice Chairman of the Board.
It was in his term with the planning Committee that the first firm plans for the Henry F. Hall Building were laid. We have all had occasion to observe that the plans developed by his committee, working closely with Faculty, were indeed well and truly laid.
We are proud of his connection with Sir George Williams University and Pleased to find him retained his interest in University affairs as Chancellor of the University of Toronto and as Chairman of the Science Council of Canada.
Mr. Chancellor, I am privileged to present Omond McKillop Solandt, on behalf of the University Council and by authority of the Board of Governors, that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
