Honorary degree citation - Colin Wesley Webster*
By: Henry F. Hall, November 1966
Mr. Chancellor,
I have the honour to present to you Colin Wesley Webster, Bachelor of Arts of McGill University which he now serves as a senior member of the Board of Governors.
Mr. Webster is the son of a distinguished family of the Province of Quebec. His father was the Hon. Senator Lorne C. Webster. He was born in Quebec City and, although widely travelled, his working life has been devoted to the industrial and commercial development of this province and country. He is president of an important firm and holds directorships in several of Canada's leading companies.
It is, however, for Mr. Webster's unassuming but effective contributions to various religious, educational and social causes that we desire to honour him. By example, by leadership and by personal contribution he continues to serve in many ways, some of which, though important, have little public recognition. The hospitals have been his particular concern and he has, for many years, been president of the Old Brewery Mission, that welcome refuge to so many of our less fortunate fellow citizens. Closer to us, Mr. Webster has long been a member of the Metropolitan Board of the Montreal Young Men's Christian Association which he served with distinction as president for two years (1962 and 1963) and, therefore, as president of the Corporation of Sir George Williams University. In the University's recent capital campaign (as in other critical circumstances) his leadership and his help have been invaluable.
Mr. Chancellor, for these reasons and many others, on behalf of the University Council and by authority of the Board of Governors, I present to you Colin Wesley Webster that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
