Honorary degree citation - Maureen Katherine Forrester*

By: Kenneth D. Adams, June 1969

MR. CHANCELLOR:

I have the honour to present to you Maureen Katherine Stewart Forrester, distinguished Canadian Contralto.

A native of Montreal, and Canada's Musical Ambassadress, Miss Forrester has shared her extraordinary gifts with many people of many lands. She has graced the stages of world famous concert halls, performing in recitals and with renowned orchestras under the leadership of eminent conductors. Her reputation as a lieder singer is unchallenged. Her artistry has bridged the gulf of cultural, political, and racial differences. In the words of Martin Luther, "singing is a noble art and a good exercise. It has nothing to do with worldly affairs, with the strife of the market place, and the rivalries of the court. The singer fears no evil, she forgets all worry and is happy..."

In honouring Miss Forrester, we recognize her contribution to the musical heritage of Canada, the cultural development of Montreal, and her personal favour to Sir George Williams University by providing us on several occasions, with her magnificent voice in the confines of our own Alumni Auditorium.

Mr. Chancellor, on behalf of the University Council and by authority of the Board of Governors, I am honoured to present to you Maureen Forrester that you may confer on her the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
