Honorary degree citation - Charles S. Carter*
By: T. Dwivedi, June 1977
Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Mr. Charles S. Carter, a distinguished Canadian and a good friend to this University, who has made far reaching contributions in the application of statistical methods to business problems.
Charles Carter obtained his bachelor degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after a short period of training with the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, he joined Bell Canada in 1929 and remained with that organization to become director its statistical division from 1946 until his retirement in 1972.
For three years after his retirment he served as Director of Associate Relations with the Conference Board of Canada. He has held the office of President of the Canadian Statistical Society and President of the Montreal Chapter of the American Statistical Association, as well as offices and memberships in a variety of Canadian academic and business groups. He has presented upwards of twenty papers at leading conferences.
Among Mr. Carter's imaginative innovations are the introduction of multiple correlation methods for prediction and forecasting, the cultivation of an inter disciplinary approach to business problems and an early recognition of the computer's potential to extend the application of statistical techniques.
The Department of Mathematics in this University ahs particular cause to be grateful to Mr. Carter for the time, experience and advice on many questions, that he has generously and unfailingly given when it needed them.
Mr. Chancellor, I am honoured to present to you, on behalf of the University Senate and by the authority of the Board of Governors, Charles S. Carter, that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
