Honorary degree citation - Arthur P. Pascal*
By: Henry Habib, June 1982
Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Arthur Peter Pascal, distinguished businessman, humanitarian and community leader. Concordia University seeks to pay tribute to a man whose activity during the past half century has borne witness to a driving concern for the community and, more broadly, for his fellow human beings.
I would mention his service as chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal and of the Combined Health and Red Cross Campaign, his work as president of the Jewish General Hospital, the Jewish Community Federation of Greater Montreal and the Neighbourhood House of Montreal. He continues to serve as Co-Presdent of the Quebec Region of the Canadian Council of Christian and Jews, a board memer of the Royal Victoria Hospital, life trustee of the Temple Emanu-El, and Honorary Vice-Chairman of the Quebec Council of the Boy Scouts of Canada. He is a member of the Order of Canada, and honorary fellow of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In particular, I would recall Arthur Pascal's support of Concordia as a member of the Board of Governors, and his very successful tenure of the position of Chairman of the Annual Development Fund. For his dedication and tireless efforts on our behalf we are most grateful.
At the beginning of the Second World War Arthur Pascal joined the 17th Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars. He saw service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the 3rd Canadian Motorcycle Regiment.
Executive Vice-President of the J. Pascal Hardware Co. Ltd., he is also Vice-President of Canada Israel Development Ltd.
Arthur Pascal is a man of many accomplishments reflecting his over riding concern for his fellow citizens, their needs and betterment. He is widely respected for his sense of civic responsibility. He is also a very private person, a warm and spiritually generous individual.
Mr. Chancellor, it is a distinct honour and privilege for me, on behalf of the University Senate and by the authority of the Board of Governors, to present to you Arthur Peter Pascal that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
