Honorary degree citation - Robert Stollery*

Mr. Vice-Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Robert Stollery, distinguished engineer, successful administrator and outstanding contributor to the construction industry in Canada and abroad.
After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941 1945, Robert Stollery attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering. In 1949 he began his career as a field engineer with Poole Construction Ltd. He progressed through various management positions ranging from Project Manager in 1952 to Vice-President and General Manager in 1964 and to President in 1969. In 1979 he assumed his present position as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PCL Construction Ltd.
At present, Mr. Stollery sits on the Board of Directors of nine corporations across Canada including the Canada Trust Company, the Federal Industries Ltd., the Northern Transportation Ltd. and the PCL Braun Simons Ltd. He is a senior member of the Conference Board Inc. of New York City and a member of the Board of Governors of the Northern Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
He has been a valued advisor to government as a member of the Construction Industries Development Council and currently as member of the Canadian Construction Research Board.
Mr. Stollery was President of the Edmonton Construction Association, Past Vice-President of the Canadian Construction Association, Past Vice-Chairman of the Conference Board of Canada in Ottawa, and Past Chairman of the Canadian Content and Capability Committee of the Construction Industry Development Council in Canada.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the construction industry, Mr. Stollery is the recipient of the Claude Aiston Memorial Award.
In appreciation of the significant honour and esteem he brings to the engineering profession in Alberta he has been awarded the Frank Spragins Memorial Award by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions as a community leader and builder of organizations and structures, the University of Alberta awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1985.
The Construction Industry in Canada is indebted to Mr. Stollery, whose distinguished career has given the industry a high profile in North America.
