French placement test

Are you interested in learning French?

To help you succeed in your learning journey, we want to ensure you start in the course that best matches your current proficiency.

That's why taking a placement test is required to determine your level and gain permission to enroll in the right French class.

Course progression

Our French courses follow this sequence:

  • FRAN 211
  • FRAN 212
  • FRAN 213
  • FRAN 301
  • FRAN 321
  • FRAA (advanced French courses)

For beginners 

  • If you have no prior knowledge of French or only a basic understanding, you'll begin with FRAN 211.
  • To confirm your beginner level, visit the office in person to meet with an academic advisor.

If you know some French

  • Take the placement test as outlined.
  • Receive permission to enroll in the course that fits your French level.

By following these steps, we can ensure you start in the best course for your learning goals!

Undergraduate students

If you have no previous knowledge of French

Contact an academic advisor
Drop by our offices and request a meeting with an academic advisor to have your French level assessed.

Next steps
The advisor will confirm if you qualify for FRAN 211 or another course.

If you have previous knowledge of French

Complete the placement test
Do the following sections: LISTENINGWRITINGREADING, and STRUCTURES (you can skip "Vocabulary").

Important

  • Take a screenshot of your results for each section (e.g., A1–C2).
  • Results will not be available after moving to the next section.

Taking the placement test

Prepare your submission

  • Write a 100-word paragraph in French introducing yourself (studies, hobbies, last travel, etc.).
  • Record a 3-minute audio about your prior French courses and daily use of French.

Submit your results

Email test.placementfr@concordia.ca with:

  • Your test results (e.g., A2, B1, C1).
  • Your name and student ID number.
  • Your written paragraph and audio recording.

Graduate students

If you have no previous knowledge of French

Contact an academic advisor
Drop by our offices and request a meeting with an academic advisor to have your French level assessed.
