Power failures

Power failures are usually short in duration, lasting on average 20 minutes. In most cases, building occupants can remain in the building until power is restored.

In the event of a power failure:

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Call Campus Safety and Prevention Services at 514-848-3717 or 3717.
  3. Remain at your workspace unless instructed to evacuate by Campus Safety and Prevention Services.
  4. Campus Safety and Prevention Services, Facilities Management and Environmental Health and Safety will determine the need for evacuation based on available emergency or natural light and the expected duration of the power failure.

Larger buildings feature emergency generators maintaining essential lighting and functions, while smaller buildings rely on battery backup lighting. Evacuation may be necessary for smaller buildings within 20 minutes, depending on natural light availability.

General tips during power failures:

  • Verify elevator emergency power before entering.

  • If in an elevator during a power failure, press the next floor button and exit promptly.

  • After several hours of power outage, check the refrigerator for spoiled food.

If you find yourself in total darkness:

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Do not attempt to leave on your own.
  3. Call Campus Safety and Prevention Services at 514-848-3717 or 3717.

Campus Safety and Prevention Services agents, equipped with flashlights, will arrive quickly to assist you.
