Hazardous material incidents

Hazardous materials include chemicals, bio-hazardous waste and radioactive material. Any incident or spill involving hazardous material must be reported.

In the event of a spill, release, or accidental exposure:

  1. Advise and warn co-workers.
  2. Evacuate the area if necessary. Notify Campus Safety and Prevention Services at 514 848-3717 or 3717.
  3. Provide the following information:
    • Name of hazardous material
    • Nature and number of persons injured or exposed
    • Quantity involved
    • Related health risks and precautions
    • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or appropriate documentation

Even if you regularly work with hazardous materials, handling a spill outside a controlled environment requires careful consideration. Only attempt to clean a spill if you have the necessary personal protective equipment, knowledge of the product, awareness of associated health risks, and appropriate cleanup equipment. Never attempt to clean a spill alone.

Accidents are a part of the learning process, and if you clean your own spill, it must still be reported. Incident investigations aim to enhance Concordia’s working and learning environment safety. They focus on reviewing procedures, not assigning blame.
