Campus Master Plan framework

The Campus Master Plan framework provides a comprehensive vision for Concordia’s Loyola and Sir George Williams campuses, transforming them into inclusive, sustainable and innovative spaces. It reflects Concordia’s commitment to reconciliation, heritage preservation, community engagement and educational excellence.

Guiding principles

The development of Concordia’s campuses is shaped by five guiding principles that reflect its mission and values:

1. Dialogue with the city

  • Strengthen ties between the university and surrounding communities.
  • Foster local outreach and partnerships.
  • Showcase campus spaces as accessible, welcoming hubs for Montrealers.
  • Emphasize educational and research contributions through campus integration.

2. Teaching and research

  • Create diverse, innovative spaces for learning and research.
  • Incorporate experiential learning opportunities and living lab concepts.
  • Expand workspaces for collaboration and creativity.
  • Highlight Concordia’s academic achievements on and off campus.

3. Institutional development

  • Balance modernization with cultural heritage preservation.
  • Optimize university properties to enhance urban comfort and ecology.
  • Foster a cohesive campus environment while respecting neighbouring communities.

4. Campus life

  • Develop vibrant indoor and outdoor spaces for student engagement.
  • Repurpose underused areas for community activities.
  • Enhance services and spaces to enrich the campus experience.

5. Mobility

  • Prioritize pedestrian-friendly campuses and active transportation.
  • Reduce car usage and streamline vehicle flow.
  • Promote sustainable transportation options like cycling and public transit.

Filters

The Campus Master Plan applies five cross-functional filters to all development or renovation projects, ensuring alignment with Concordia’s long-term vision:

1. Indigenous Decolonization

  • Honour Indigenous histories, knowledge and traditions.
  • Create inclusive spaces for gatherings, education and cultural representation.
  • Integrate Indigenous languages and art throughout campus design.
  • Promote reconciliation through collaboration with Indigenous representatives.

2. Sustainability

  • Enhance climate resilience, biodiversity and energy efficiency.
  • Support urban agriculture and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Promote sustainable materials and water management practices.

3. Inclusion

  • Ensure all spaces are safe, accessible and welcoming.
  • Foster a sense of ownership and belonging through community input.
  • Develop flexible and diverse spaces tailored to different needs.
  • Enhance wayfinding to improve campus navigation for all users.

4. Health and well-being

  • Design spaces that encourage physical activity and mental wellness.
  • Promote access to nature, green spaces and urban agriculture.
  • Create comfortable, well-lit and eco-friendly environments.

5. Concordia identity

  • Reflect Concordia’s mission and values in its built environment.
  • Highlight each campus’ unique identity while unifying them under the university brand.
  • Promote accessibility, visibility and inclusivity across all spaces.
